Gerard Chalkly is staging a two-man version of:

'Address Unknown'

at St Mary’s Church, Longfleet

on Wednesday 8 September @ 7.30.

The story is of two Germans, best friends since childhood, who emigrate to San Francisco in the 1920s, they go into partnership and set up a gallery selling German art.  What makes them special from the viewpoint of the story is that one is Jewish.  The non-Jewish partner returns to Germany in the early 30s to source fresh material for their gallery and as the story unfolds, the audience witnesses the rise of Fascism through the relationship of the two friends as it is recorded in the letters they exchange.  Ultimately, we see friendship stretched and finally broken as one friend chooses ideology over loyalty to his friend.

The story is powerful and gripping.  What makes it so remarkable is that the book on which the play is based was written contemporaneously, published in 1938  and banned in Germany in 1941. While we take the story of the holocaust as a given in those days it was still very novel and not something discussed openly, particularly in America.

Gerard has devised the play and is producing it with a friend, James Watson-Lee, in aid of an Argentinian Orphanage they helped in last year.  The Orphanage, Hogar El Alba, is a Christian foundation assisting victims of Argentina’s troubled passed.
